The Heart and Soul of the Pressure Washer: The Pump
The heart of the pressure washer is the pump - this single device determines the pumps' power, and since it's always in use is one of the parts that breaks the most. Unfortunately, it's also one of the most expensive to replace. You might want to know how pumps work so you can pick the most reliable one before you buy, or you might want to know so you can buy cheaper replacement parts. There are two type of pressure washer pumps, ceramic and axial. Ceramic pumps are also known as triplex plunger pumps and are considered the industry standard. They last the longest, have the smoothest action, and won't clog due to minerals and other residual chemicals in the water. If you're a professional, spend the extra and get ceramic pumps - they are well worth the investment in the long term. Axial pumps are cheaper and not quite as reliable as ceramic pumps. That's not to say they're not reliable, of course. Brass pumps are almost as good as ceramic and won't corrode and clog like ceramic pumps. However, stainless steel pumps will. You should try to steer clear of stainless steel axial pumps unless price is the only concern. If you live in an area with hard water, the water will eat up your pump. The pump is actually connected to the motor either by belt or direct-drive. Direct-drive pumps are directly connected to the engine. They are the most reliable and are more efficient than belt driven pumps. In addition, belt driven pumps have belts that can wear and break over time. Of course, a simple belt repair is also much easier to fix than a direct-drive motor. If your pump dies, then you can either get a replacement from the manufacturer or from a third party retailer online. Manufacturer quality replacement pumps will cost you an arm and a leg, however they are a guaranteed fit for your pressure washer, come with manufacturer-grade warranties, and will usually last longer and perform better than their 3rd party manufacturer counterparts. At least you get good value for your arm and leg. You'll save a bundle by purchasing from the internet, and if you find a reputable supplier the quality will usually be sufficient. The pump is the most used part in the pressure washer and the most likely to break. Now that you know everything you need to know about pumps, you can pick out the correct pump for your needs. |
